It is with much excitement (and abject terror) that I announce the publishing of my debut novel, Nocturne In Black And White. It only took seven years to complete. Yes, seven. Well, I had mostly finished it after the first year or two, but then silly things like work, having children, and maintaining a house got in the way.
But, alas! It has arrived!
What is it about, you ask? Hmm, I guess I’d sum it up by saying it is a tale of love, loss ruin and redemption exploring a young white man’s difficulty reconciling the racism of his father’s generation with the romantic pull he feels for a spirited African American girl set against the backdrop of two historic Detroit summers: during the riot of ’67 and then in ’08 leading up to the momentous presidential election.
You know, the usual stuff.
In all seriousness, it was a labor of love borne out of seeing the blight and ruin of the city I call home (sort of. I know I’m a suburbanite but I can claim the city still, right? I mean, I go down there all the time. That has to count for something) and tracing much of it back to that fateful summer over fifty years ago. It is a difficult story at times and like Deadpool 2, it is not for children (for the language mostly. It is 100% free of beheadings and genital-based humor).
I wrote it to shine a light on the objective absurdity of racial inequality and the devastating socioeconomic repercussions it can lead to. Please check it out. I hope it moves you in some way and that you encourage others to read it as well (just a few hundred thousand of your closest friends ought to do. I’d like to bump up my Amazon ranking a bit past its current #590,106…).
Thanks- E
